With a history dating back to 1789, the Olde Angel is not short on atmosphere: there’s a ghost (a soldier was killed here when the Americans torched the place in the War of 1812) and a convivial feel (you might hear stage-trained voices from the popular pub below, where Shaw Festival actors come to unwind after the show). Five guest rooms have more character than luxury: four-poster beds, smallish bathrooms and such curiosities as a corner table fashioned from a cobbler’s bench. For dinner, the pub serves slabs of prime rib and Guinness-and-steak pie.
