Perched across the street from the Rideau Canal in the historic village of Merrickville, guests can opt for one of the new luxury suites with a fireplace in the renovated 1861 stone granary building. The Lockmaster has a full-size living room (including a queen pullout sofa), a king-size bed, and one and a half baths. Upstairs, the Trillium promises romance, with French decor, original stone walls and a lace-trimmed linen duvet. House chef Thomas Riding’s seasonal menus emphasize local fare and Canadiana, including smoked salmon from New Brunswick, and Forfar cheddar and organic greens. For active types, the Canadian Recreational Canoeing Association’s Rideau Outdoor Centre (613-269-2910) rents kayaks and canoes for exploring the Rideau National Bird Sanctuary. Those who’d rather sail head for the Harriet By (613-269-9333). The 45-minute cruises on a canopied boat depart from the depot adjacent to the historic Blockhouse.
