Of the three Vintage Hotels properties in Niagara-on-the-Lake (the Prince of Wales and Pillar and Post are the others), the Queen’s Landing beckons, with its gracious Georgian decor and views of the Niagara River. Take lunch on the terrace while watching boaters dash up and down the river (Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours, 1-888-438-4444, depart from just down the street), or enjoy a barbecue to the sounds of fountains on the patio. Some of the inn’s 142 rooms are equipped with fireplaces and Jacuzzis, but knowing guests stray from the hotel proper and settle in a neighbouring heritage home owned and operated by Queen’s Landing. The 1835 Dockmaster House offers all the comforts of an established inn in a historic landmark. Its Princess Royal Room—with a four-poster bed, velvet sofa and gas fireplace—is a cocoon-like retreat under the eaves; reproductions of European oils complete the 19th-century ambience.
