Located amid the verdant hills east of Algonquin Provincial Park, this clapboard inn is fast becoming a favourite with park-goers who prefer a hot soak and a firm mattress to roughing it in the bush. Owners Nancy and Warwick Fortune have renovated their inn with a Canadiana theme: the Hudson’s Bay Room, for instance, displays the ubiquitous striped woollen blankets on its beds and vintage snowshoes and cross-country skis on its walls. An outdoor hot tub is luxurious. Crossing the Madawaska River in several places, a nearby abandoned rail bed is available for hiking and snowmobiling. Barry’s Bay Outfitters (613-756-9009, 1-888-779-7705), a short drive east, offers guided canoe and kayak day trips (May to Oct., weather permitting), and rentals.
Driving Time:
three and a half hours.
When:
Dec. to Oct.
