Set in the rolling countryside near Cambridge, this grand hotel has a lofty pedigree. In summer months, the rooms in the Cloisters wing are popular for their views of the croquet lawn and orchard. Each has a luxurious mahogany-panelled bathroom, as well as a wood-burning fireplace. The seven-year-old stable suites and lofts are stylishly rustic. French doors in the stable’s terrace rooms open to a small patio area with a wooded hillside sloping down to the Grand River. A waterfront trail leads to the town of Paris—a half-day’s cycle away. Idle pleasures await in the spa, where treatments include a full-body exfoliation followed by an aromatherapy bath and massage (two hours, $195). Golfers head for the acclaimed Whistle Bear Golf Club, home of the 2004 CPGA championship. The hotel’s restaurant is a perennial draw: chef Jonathan Gushue favours the produce grown in Langdon’s gardens; afternoon tea is served in the conservatory. Dogs are permitted in terrace-level rooms.
