A renovated 1877 woollen mill is the heart of this sprawling complex on a wooded riverside property near Lake Huron. Antique mill machinery has been refashioned into coffee tables and chandeliers, lending the inn rustic ambience, despite its four-diamond CAA rating. The spacious Ivey rooms in the Gledhill building offer pretty views of a pond and wooded hillside, through double French doors that open onto wrought iron balconies. Pine furniture, feather duvets and crisp white cotton linens on the king-size beds add to the country atmosphere. Rooms on the second and third floors of the main inn are smaller, but exude on old-fashioned English flair, with their wooden beams, sloping ceilings, floral wallpapers and creaky floors. For small groups and large families, Sharpe’s Retreat is a private house with two bedrooms, a kitchenette and living room. An indoor pool is located in the Rivermill building, along with an Aveda spa offering a full range of treatments, from massages to manicures. Lake Huron pickerel is among the regional specialties served in the Ivey Dining Room. Work up an appetite on some 20 kilometres of hiking and cross-country skiing trails.
