The handsome 1859 Georgian brick building, reputed to be the oldest public school in Niagara-on-the-Lake, has been reborn as a six-room inn. After purchasing the historic but dilapidated building in 2002, Patricia and Greg Knight gutted the interior, salvaging what materials they could for reuse, including the tin ceilings and hardwood floors. Most of the guest suites are on the second floor, and feature 17-foot ceilings, with loft-style bedrooms tucked under the exposed trusses, and ensuite bathrooms and sitting areas below. Each boasts its own gas fireplace, large windows and a mini-fridge stocked with complimentary bevvies. Antiques abound, such as the buffet refashioned into a granite-topped bathroom vanity in the Cranberry suite. For those who prefer everything on one level, Arthur’s Chamber is a ground-floor room with 12-foot ceilings that exudes a medieval vibe, with a massive oak headboard looming over the king bed and a coat-of-arms tapestry hanging on the wall beside it. Guests have their own third-floor lounge, where photos of the old school hang on the wall. On summer afternoons the garden pergola makes a shady spot to lounge.
