Situated in Montreal’s Old City, Le St-James—possibly Canada’s finest hotel—evokes Old World grandeur, balanced with modern luxury. In this former 19th-century bank building, all the bathrooms are decked out in Italian marble, and beds are topped with the finest duvets and super-fine cottons. Even the elevator is a work of art, its sculpted brass doors salvaged from New York’s Waldorf Hotel. Great care was taken in restoring the lavish interior, including the ornate plaster work, coffered ceilings and Greek columns of the aptly named Grand Salon, where meals are served amid lacquered screens, silk draperies and antique vases. No wonder this is the preferred stop of movie stars and rock celebs (the Rolling Stones have twice booked the entire hotel). The fabulous Pointe-à-Callière Montréal Museum of Archaeology and History and interesting home decor shops are nearby.
