Set amid four acres of lawns and maple trees, this 1840s stone house is a comfortable B&B. In 1882, owner Peter McLaren, a lumberman and senator, hired the same architect who worked on Ottawa’s Parliament Buildings to design his property’s grand carriage house, complete with a turret and copper roof tiles. In the main house, all six guest rooms have ensuite baths. The house is popular with wedding parties and architecture lovers, who come to look at the town’s outstanding mid-19th-century stone buildings. Not to be missed is Matheson House, home of the Perth Museum. Artifacts include pistols used in the province’s last fatal duel, and a lump of cheddar reputed to have come from the wheel that Perth’s cheese makers sent to the 1893 World’s Fair, where it won first place.
