Once a bustling mill town, today’s Almonte has been rebuilt with condos and cafés. The Blue Heron is a comfortable base for exploring the area’s attractions. Built in the 1850s, the recently renovated log home has a wraparound porch and a sunroom overlooking the Mississippi River. Of the four guest rooms, the English Garden Room faces the river, while the Master Suite has a full private bath. An in-ground pool is a blessing during the summer; canoes are available for a tour of the river. Visitors should plan to stop at Pakenham General Store (613-624-5280) for antiques. The Mill of Kintail Conservation Area’s (613-256-3610) riverside forest trail leads to a truly fascinating museum in a former mill that was also once the summer home of artist Robert Tait McKenzie (1867–1938). In June, thousands of showy lady’s slipper orchids bloom at nearby Purdon Conservation Area (613-259-2421).
