This 109-acre recreational farm north of Whitby has been designed to make agricultural getaways accessible to physically and mentally challenged travellers. Wheelchair-friendly paved paths link farm areas, ponds and a marsh boardwalk. Day visitors can pet alpacas, sheep and goats, or pick their own apples from easy-to-reach dwarf trees. Youngsters love the playful atmosphere: watching water critters in the marsh, or picking veggies in the pizza-themed garden, filled with tomatoes, peppers and basil. Like many farms, this one is particularly fun in autumn, when activities typically include a pick-your-own pumpkin patch and a wheelchair-accessible corn maze. The farm also offers therapeutic horseback riding lessons in fully accessible stables. Riding spaces are fully booked at present, but visitors can tour the stables and watch the lessons. Two furnished apartments offer lodging (up to six nights) and have fully equipped kitchens, hospital beds and grab bars.
Driving Time:
one hour.
When:
year-round.
How Much:
day rate $8 per person; one-bedroom apartment from $85 per night, three-bedroom from $110.
