This offshoot of Fleming College is known for its engaging and often unusual workshops. Where else can you learn how to make a corset, do tinsmithing and create a musical instrument? Designed by Toronto’s Diamond and Schmitt Architects, the building is situated in a 200-acre park on Head Lake in the village of Haliburton. Workshops are offered in glass-blowing, how to make stained glass stepping stones and fabric, clowning, making rustic garden accessories, painting, and Scottish country dancing. Notable teachers, include Yasmina Ramzy of Arabesque Dance Company, who instructs students in belly dance; Ian Tamblyn, a folk musician, who teaches songwriting; and travel writer Kate Pocock. The school helps students find rooms at local resorts, rental cottages and local homes; one of the best is Sunny Rock Bed and Breakfast (705-286-4922, 1-888-786-6976).
