For anyone who ever wished they’d gone to sea, this 1958 Coast Guard light icebreaker, now moored at Kingston’s Marine Museum of the Great Lakes, offers a taste of the real thing. In this floating B&B guests sleep in the captain’s and officers’ cabins. Most rooms are pretty basic: just a couple of bunks and a sink. But the captain’s, chief officer’s and two VIP cabins all have ensuite toilets and showers. The regular crew cabins that were so popular with backpackers have been closed for renovations that are expected to continue for the next two years. The harbour views are gone now that the ship has been moved from the wharf to a dock adjacent to the museum. A continental breakfast is served in the officers’ mess and guests must leave by 10 a.m., when museum visitors start arriving.
Driving Time:
two hours.
When:
B&B, Victoria Day to Labour Day; museum, year-round.
How Much:
$75–$125 per night.
