Lion’s Head
- Lion’s Head
The sleepy town of Lion’s Head offers more than just a pit stop on the way to Tobermory. Lion’s Head Beach Park is a scenic place for lunch: picnic tables and harbourfront barbecues are set against a dramatic backdrop of limestone cliffs. The Bruce Trail joins with Lion’s Head Provincial Nature Reserve, home to 10,000-year-old glacial potholes. Novice hikers be warned: after the second pothole, the trail leading to McKay’s Harbour gets very challenging, as the terrain is rocky, with sudden dips and steep climbs. It’s worth the effort, though: the clifftop views of Georgian Bay are spectacular. For an après-hike drink, stop by Lion’s Head Inn or hop over to Mary Dale’s, a local favourite, for a meal. If you decide to stay the night, camping is available at Lion’s Head Beach Park and Campground (519-793-4090). The best times to visit are summer and fall, as most tourist sites, such as the Artists’ Co-Op Gallery (home to handcrafted works by artists from the Grey and Bruce counties), close after Thanksgiving.
