In downtown Toronto, it’s easy to forget that Lake Ontario lies at our doorstep. In the warmer months, the three-kilometre Beach boardwalk is the city’s most tropical precinct. This stretch of shore has been a refuge of sorts since 1793, when Pennsylvanian Loyalist Sarah Ashbridge moved her family here in the aftermath of the American Revolution. By the 1870s, the area had become a resort town for citizens of Toronto. Highlights include birdwatching at Ashbridge’s Bay Park, and the flora and silky sand of Kew Gardens Park.
