At more than 47 square kilometres, this is one of North America’s largest urban parks. It is also an excellent example of Carolinian habitat, featuring wetlands, meadows and mixed hardwood forests. Flora ranges from American ginseng to black walnut; rare animal species include peregrine falcons and Carolina wrens. The mouth of the Rouge River is a fine place to start. The sprawling Rouge Marsh encompasses 55 per cent of the GTA’s coastal wetlands, and is home to birds and many species of fish. The Glen Eagles Vista is a fine spot to admire colourful maple and walnut trees. A few minutes away, you can stay the night at the Glen Rouge, Toronto’s only campground.
