In 1937, this art deco gem became the new home of the Toronto Stock Exchange. But in 1983, it moved to larger digs at King and York streets; in 1994, the Design Exchange moved in. Made of limestone and granite, the beige four-storey building is incorporated into one of the TD Centre’s black skyscrapers, an arrangement that overpowers the art deco detailing. Still, there are plenty of striking touches: the ornate metal entrance is topped by a large stone frieze of Canadian workers toiling for a more prosperous tomorrow. The ground floor hosts a revolving series of free exhibits centred on Canadian and international design. Up the grand staircase—a masterpiece of smoky marble and wooden railings with stainless steel trim—is the former trading floor, three storeys high, with eight murals by painter Charles Comfort. The third floor houses feature exhibitions, which in the past have included international showings from Italy, Japan and the Netherlands.
