Clustered on a peninsula in Algonquin’s scenic Lake of Two Rivers, 30 log cabins are set among tidy flower beds and towering spruce. Each cabin comes with a canoe and a little patch of lakefront from which to launch it. Those facing the open lake have the best views, but the buildings looking to the shoreline and Highway 60 across the water are more generously spaced. Some cottages date as far back as the 1930s, and their log interiors glow with the patina of age. Guests may pick up a complimentary bag of peanuts to feed the chipmunks, or sit on the dock and listen to the loons. Of Algonquin’s three lodges, this one is closest to the highway and offers drive-in convenience. Located 33 kilometres from the park’s west gate, the lodge is handy to the Spruce Bog and Lookout Trails. Dinner is served in two sittings, but the log dining room still seems packed, as waitresses bring heaping plates of roast beef with all the fixings, followed by pie with ice cream.
