Just south of the QEW, on a tree-lined stretch of road, sit two unlikely neighbours: the former homes of a retired sea captain and a cash-strapped farm family. Visitors start at the Anchorage, a stately Regency-style cottage that looks as if it should command a lake view (it did, until it was moved inland in 1976). Captain John Skynner, a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars, immigrated to Canada at age 76 and settled here in 1837; his retirement home now hosts rotating exhibitions on local history. Nearby sits the more humble Bradley House, built between 1830 and 1840. The four-bedroom saltbox style was typical housing for a middle-class farm family—in this case, Lewis and Elizabeth Bradley and their seven children.
