Benares Historic House

  • 1507 Clarkson Rd. N. View on map »
  • Mississauga
  • 905-615-4860

Dating back to the early 20th century, this grand red-brick Georgian brings a touch of stateliness to Mississauga. It once anchored the estate of Captain James Harris, a British military officer from the Victorian era. Harris’s family occupied the house for four generations before his great-grandchildren donated it to the Ontario Heritage Foundation (now the Ontario Heritage Trust), stacked with heirlooms. Today, a separate visitor centre tells the family history; the house itself has been restored to how it would have looked in 1918. The handmade furniture and picturesque views offer a vision of gracious living. In the children’s room, visitors marvel at antique toys, from a crokinole board to a homemade 1896 dollhouse that looks like Benares itself.
