Gibson House Museum

Built in 1851, this elegant red-brick Georgian was originally the home of David Gibson, a land surveyor and local politician of the day. Tours, led by a costumed guide, may begin by the brick oven in the kitchen, site of many cooking workshops, before moving on to the family dining room, which houses an original tall case clock. A front parlour and upstairs bedrooms—for both family and hired help—are also open for viewing. Most intriguing is the workroom, where a spinning wheel, wool winder and foot-operated sewing machine hint at the effort involved in day-to-day chores. If you haven’t booked a tour, stop by the museum’s interactive Discovery Gallery, where kids can dress up in period costumes, play 19th-century toys (such as Jacob’s ladder) and take in the historical displays.
