Home to the Eaton Auditorium, the Round Room Restaurant (left to moulder since it was shuttered in the late ’70s) and the Carlu (which recently underwent a $7.5-million restoration), this art deco building feels more alive and relevant than it has in decades. A window facing Yonge Street teases passersby with seasonal displays for the Carlu, and glimpses of the renewed glamour, romance and elegance of the 1930s space, named after Jacques Carlu, the original architect. (Unfortunately the Carlu isn’t available for tours, but it can be rented for private events.) Intended as a 670-foot skyscraper designed to replace the downtown Eaton’s flagship store, a tall College Park was scuttled by financial problems, resulting in a low-rise adjunct to the Queen West location. In 1977 it was repurposed, and is now populated by provincial courts, shops, condos, eateries and offices.
