A recent renovation has added natural light and removed the sense of claustrophobia. Newly erected shelves are crammed with such luxe products as truffle paste, Matcha tea and Himalayan salt. The shop still lives up to its name, selling every spice under the sun, whole or ground, in small bags for home cooks and two-kilogram sacks for chefs. Hard-to-find spice blends include zatar and Old Bay Seasoning. Those trying out new Indian recipes will find everything under one roof: lentils, basmati rice, pappadum, and in the freezer, paneer and whole-wheat chapati. Java hounds find nirvana in a wall of bulk coffee beans that houses everything from green Ethiopian to a selection of organic, fair-trade and shade-grown varieties. A wide variety of teas, both loose leaf and bagged, are also available. Closed Sunday.
