Once a humble fruit market, Longo’s has gradually blossomed into a gourmet grocery chain, with 15 stores scattered across the GTA. The York Mills location is a one-stop shop for north Toronto foodies, with organic options and gourmet surprises in every section. In prepared foods, delectables include barbecued chicken (regular or organic), eggplant parmigiana and cabbage rolls. In the capacious produce area, you can find a dozen types of tomatoes, including the green zebra, with striped skin and a mild flavour. In meats, a new highlight includes Beretta’s vacuum-packed beef steaks, franks and ground turkey. Choice cheeses include Balderson Vintners cheddar (one version to be paired with red wine, the other with white) and Beemster, a Dutch-aged gouda. Gourmet olive oils add zest to any salad. Baked sweets are prepared in-store or brought in from Dufflet; Stonemill breads are fresh-baked on-site.
