Fresh From the Farm

It all started 13 years ago with owners Tim and Jacqui Schmucker supplying fresh meats (sourced from Mennonite farmers) to their friends, and friends of their friends, and so on (using someone else’s shop as the pickup site), until, with a burgeoning customer base, they opened a storefront of their own. The Schmuckers have since established a network of Mennonite and Amish farming families in the Kitchener-Waterloo region who produce meats that are hormone- and drug-free, raised “as naturally as possible.” There’s dry-aged beef, lamb, pork, chicken, elk, eggs and wild fish—all from Ontario. In the summer, fresh produce arrives directly from regional farms. Come fall, the summer’s bounty is preserved for winter: jars of Ontario peaches and cherries, and the freezer is stocked with bags of beans, peas and corn.
