An indie alternative to the major chains, Fiesta draws in shoppers with its excellent selection of local, organic and health food store–style stuff: Ace Bakery bread, Dufflet pastries, Rowe Farms meat, and a dairy section lined with glass bottles. Other differences between Fiesta and the generic super-grocer chains are more subtle: the two parking lots are sparsely populated, but the bike racks overflow, and “Product of Ontario” stickers often outnumber those indicating provenance from Chile, Mexico or California. Charmingly unpolished staff patrol the cash registers and garden centre; but don’t worry, they won’t frown on you if you need a plastic bag.
