Chef David Kokai spent 15 years honing his skills in some of Toronto’s best kitchens—Mercer Street Grill, Sequel, Auberge du Pommier—before setting up shop at the dodgier end of Queen East. Taking over an old Money Mart, he and his wife, Kathleen Finlay, have brought chi-chi pantry staples and grab-and-go gourmet fare to Leslieville. Rotisserie chicken is succulent after 12 hours in brine. The freezer and cooler brim with thoughtfully packaged meals: venison and sun-dried tomato terrine vacuum-packed with crostini, compote and cornichon. Almost all the packaging is biodegradable or reusable.
