Specialty food shops have long peppered this undiscovered gourmet strip—with Hungarian, Jamaican, Italian, West Indian and Latin American provisions readily available—but one thing was long elusive: a decent baguette. And so the Basque pâtisserie was a welcome addition to this lively stretch of St. Clair West when the Folgoas family opened shop four years back. The loaves—fresh baked and golden, with an adequately crunchy crust and a light, pillowy interior—draw patrons in and keep them coming back, though the selection of viennoiseries, gâteaux and biscuits doesn’t hurt. Pain Perdu recently acquired a licence and is now serving up a most soigné lunch spread, featuring such bistro classics as quiche (lorraine, and otherworldly chèvre-and-rapini), confit de canard and French wines by the glass. Closed Monday and Tuesday.
