Karma Co - op

Before the organic boom and the age of Whole Foods there was Karma Co-op. Since 1972, this elusive non-profit shop (first-timers looking for the Palmerston alley entrance may wonder if the store is merely a utopian dream) has been bringing organic groceries and eco-friendly household products to proactive Annexites unwilling to purchase mass-produced provisions under the watchful eye of Galen Weston. Members (there are currently 1,000) pay a $70 deposit, plus $18 per year. There’s also the option of working two hours each month in exchange for a 10 per cent discount on purchases. The return: reasonably priced health food staples and lush produce from local farmers.
