Little Tokyo on Augusta

Between the shelves lined with many Japanese staple dry goods (Shimaya Bonito Flavoured Soup Powder Packs, in MSG and MSG-free varieties), the prettily packaged bottles of lychee tea in the cooler and the Hello Kitty strawberry milk biscuits by the cash, first-time shoppers might be inclined to do a double take. This is boho Kensington, right? But one product on offer, the Chopstick Master (self-described as “chopsticks with training wheels”) reminds us that we’re not in Tokyo after all. The airy shop is a surprisingly cohesive trove of all things Land of the Rising Sun, from quirky products exemplifying Japanese efficiency (Siyakiku pre-cooked rice) to the sort-of practical (bulk bags of wasabi powder). Tubs of homemade ice cream (including black sesame and green tea) give Kensington Organics a run for its money.
