This tried-and-true local cheese chain now has eight outlets, meaning much of Toronto has full access to all the world’s greatest cheeses. But what excites owner Ektor Stroutzas is “what’s happening here in Eastern Canada.” From Quebec comes Kenogami, a washed-rind cow’s milk stinker with a buttery texture and a rich, toasted-almond-like finish. La Belle Province’s famous Le Riopelle de l’Isle, that über-creamy, luxe cow’s milk triple cream, is so popular Stroutzas can barely keep it in the warehouse. Recommendations from Ontario include Back Forty’s semi-firm, gently toasted sheep’s milk Bonnechere, and any of Thunder Oak’s range of goudas. Each store is staffed by helpful folk who’ll offer you a taste of anything.
