This storefront in Annex north is unrecognizable from its previous incarnation as a purveyor of saccharine confections. Gone is the psychedelic gumball machine mural from its days as a Sugar Mountain outpost, replaced with a subdued royal blue awning and an interior that’s equal parts slick and breezy. Decor is elegant: lacquered blue and white trim, gleaming hardwood floors and beams of light from chrome fixtures overhead show off the raison d’être—chocolates—at their best. Though Stubbe is known for its truffles, made with Belgian chocolate courtesy of Callebaut, we’re quite taken with the store’s selection of things pretty and practical. Almond sugar cookies, wrapped plainly in Cellophane and jewel-hued ribbon, crumble and dissolve in the mouth to reveal a whisper of flavour that’s pure, buttery and unadulterated. Closed Sunday.
