Europe’s equivalent of Laura Secord, Belgian chocolatier Leonidas boasts an incredible 1,400 bonbon counters around the globe. Freshly made chocolates (or pralines, as they’re known in the motherland) are flown in weekly from Belgium and sold for a reasonable $7.80 per 100 grams. There are more than 100 varieties of creamy centres to choose from, in ganache, liqueur, buttercream and marzipan, but it is definitely the manon—a confection composed of hazelnut, buttercream and white chocolate—that the company is famous for. Shapes and textures must also be considered when choosing an assortment; some have delicately crimped and scalloped edges, others are neatly wrapped in foil, while straightforward ingots might be embellished with a scrolling detail.
