Truck driver or chocolatier? Seems like a no-brainer, but it was a tough call for Patrick Smets, who left his native Belgium, where he hauled loads, to join his brother in the chocolate business here in Toronto. At the Belgian Chocolate Shop in the Beach, he quickly discovered his palate and, in time, opened his own shop. Regulars stream in for their daily hit of espresso with a home-baked cookie (one of a dozen home-baked varieties) or beautiful truffles made with Michel Cluizel or Valrhona chocolate. In summer, iced chocolate frappés are blended to order; in winter, outrageously good jalapeno-infused hot chocolate will warm sippers from the inside out.
