Daiter's

Cottage cheese sold in a cheesecloth bag is still a big draw at this 73-year-old shop, but as it evolves into a one-stop market, there are other gems here, too. Daiter’s own cream cheeses (made without preservatives or fillers) come in several flavours, including lox, pimento and garlic-dill. The staff clean and cure their own schmaltz herring, available in many incarnations: the tender yet meaty fillet is cut into bite-size pieces and tossed with sliced onions. There’s smoked fish aplenty: salmon, mackerel, black cod, lake trout, whitefish and carp. Prepared foods are popular—say, grilled sea bass in sun-dried tomato sauce. The in-house bakery makes bobkas, blintzes, knishes and ruggalach.
