Rowe Farms

Guelph-based Rowe Farms, a long-time poultry supplier, has finally hung out its own Toronto shingles, in Leslieville and Roncesvalles. It’s hard not to buy into the company’s values (detailed on the shop’s walls), which include a mandate of locally grown, antibiotic- and hormone-free products produced in a way that is eco-friendly and committed to animal welfare. A map on the counter locates the 12 farmers across southern Ontario who form the Rowe Farms co-operative today, maintaining the standards established on the family farm back in 1967. Self-serve refrigerators are full of such prepackaged options as herb-marinated legs of lamb and conventional (read thin-cut) steaks. Head to the full-serve butcher counter for juicy one-and-a-quarter-inch-thick chipotle rib-eye steaks and ancho-rubbed pork chops. Beef is a Hereford-Angus cross and dry-aged a minimum of three weeks. Staff are enthusiastic and helpful.
