This pretty little bakery is decorated with all things French, to match the food. Herbed savoury croissants are so big they practically make a meal; superlative French loaves are cradled in folds of burlap. Compact rounds of sourdough, sunflower seed, multi-grain and roasted garlic–infused olive will set you back $5.95, but such is the price one pays for the city’s best bread. Made with a starter created some 200 years ago by an Alsacian Thuet ancestor, the loaves are wonderfully flavourful without being too sour, rustic without being too chewy.
