A poppy seed roll nonpareil can be found alongside several other delectable treats; it’s moist, dense and incredibly fresh. As the steady stream of customers can attest, the doughnuts are also where it’s at: these plump pillows of dough are light on oil but heavy on flavour, filled with crimson plum jam or cheese, then finished with powdered sugar or a simple icing. This is also the place for European-style cheesecakes (the coconut incarnation is rich and smooth), Easter babas, and some of Toronto’s best rye breads, of which there are 10 varieties, running the gamut from light to dark, with caraway, onions or raisins. Don’t miss the cream roll: a crispy-chewy wafer roll filled with fresh whipping cream. Alas, one is never enough.
