A poppy seed roll sans pareil can be found alongside several other delectations; it’s moist, dense and incredibly fresh. As the steady stream of customers can attest, the doughnuts are also where it’s at: these plump pillows of dough are light on oil but heavy on flavour, filled with crimson plum jam or cheese, then finished with powdered sugar or a simple icing. This is also the place for European-style cheesecakes (the coconut incarnation is rich and smooth), Easter babas, and some of Toronto’s best rye breads, of which there are 10 options, running the gamut from light to dark, with caraway, onions or raisins. For something less hearty, try the cream roll—a delicate crispy-chewy wafer roll filled with fresh whipping cream. Closed Sunday.
