Housed in new Kensington digs, Alchemy still makes its lovely oval loaves: Afghani with nigella seed, dill and onion, and even the occasional parsnip loaf. Jars of buttery shortbread—in such inventive flavours as curry, Persian mahleb and fragrant cardamom-orange—line the countertop. Tables and chairs are set for sandwiches, salads and soups at lunch. And, if energetic owner Brian Kirk is anything to go by, business looks ready to boom: “I can make 400 loaves an hour in my new oven.” Closed Monday.
