Owner-instructor Heather Morton is the real deal. Making annual pilgrimages to Mysore, India, to advance her personal practice, she’s equally committed to the yogic evolution of her students, some of whom she’s taught since her studio opened in 1997. Enlightenment requires discipline, however, and students must commit to six-week courses that progress in intensity. (There are no drop-in classes.) Morton teaches novices and advanced practitioners alike, and structures her ashtanga, Atma Vikasa and Backbending classes to suit individual need. Personal attention is guaranteed: class size is limited to five students. The two-hour or 90-minute sessions occur once a week, and students can sign up for several courses at one time. Her Yorkville studio, just opposite Whole Foods, is a balmy den all year round—a gas fireplace heats the practice room, even in summer.
How much:
six-week courses $345–$360, private classes $115 per hour.
