Known for its avid racers, this Toronto Harbour–based yacht club is also a great place for more casual keelboat sailors to mingle and learn new skills. The majority of members are not boat owners; most are assigned berths on boats through racing and cruising crew banks. For an extra fee, Shark Club members have unlimited access to one of four club-owned boats. Skipper wannabes can sign up for Basic Cruising, which certifies graduates to captain a boat of up to 30 feet in 10- to 15-knot winds. Or learn to crew with the member-run Intro to Keelboat Sailing. Non-members can test the waters during a four-hour sail. There’s also an Adult Dinghy Learn to Sail program. All courses are Canadian Yachting Association certified. Open year-round.
How much:
non–boat owners’ membership approx. $300 per year.
