Though it doesn’t exactly trip off the tongue, the Feldenkrais Method will help your body function more efficiently. The brainchild of a Russian-born Israeli engineer, physicist and martial artist, the method re-educates ailing bodies through a series of gentle exercises. It was developed in the 1940s, when Dr. Feldenkrais injured his knee and physicians said he would live with chronic pain. Instead, the good doctor studied neurology and biomechanics, and cured his own injury. The key, he said, is to break bad habits of movement. Not unlike Pilates, it restores muscle balance and improves posture and flexibility. Favoured by musicians (including Yo-Yo Ma), the method can be used to treat injuries, fibromyalgia, chronic pain and cerebral palsy.
How much:
initial class $10; classes $22 ($18 with 12- to 15-week full-term enrolment).
