The academy has been a neighbourhood hub for 18 years; old-school martial arts are its lifeblood. These are taught in the traditional, time-honoured ways, with a focus on discipline, health and self-improvement. Karate and kobudo take place in the lower training hall, which features a sprung hardwood floor, or in the main training area, which boasts a tatami mat floor for jiu-jitsu classes. Children compose a major portion of the clientele; parents can keep an eye on their progeny via closed-circuit TV. They can also tone up in the adjoining weight room (for a nominal fee).
How much:
no initiation fee; children four years and up, one year (two classes per week) $749; adults, three months (two classes per week) $299, one year (two classes per week) $949.
