Derived from an ancient form of unarmed combat, aikido is a 90-year-old art that is characterized by wide-sweeping circular movements. Emphasis is on the mind-body connection; students begin with meditation and stretches before moving into vigorous rolls, then basic forms and movements from a standing position. More advanced scholars work with wooden swords, sticks and knives. Most are under the guidance of sensei Kimeda, an eighth-degree black belt and the first aikido instructor in Canada.
