Fitness & WellnessGyms: Women's

Toronto Ladies Gym

The smell of baking bread from a nearby sub shop cruelly wafts down the stairs of this subterranean gym, which was once a Vic Tanny’s (and a number of other gyms) before being resurrected as a women-only facility. Carbs are quickly forgotten once boot camp—a gruelling but popular class—begins. Forty-minute lunch-hour spinning and aerobics classes cater to the office worker clientele. Boxing classes are a club specialty; the hour-long session mixes kick-boxing moves, circuit training and a humanoid punching bag whose body parts light up to direct your uppercuts. “After 10 minutes you won’t feel your shoulders,” promises club owner Alex Karpov, himself a former boxer. The usual roster of cardio and strength-training machines crowds the floor, and while the equipment is a mash-up of brands and eras, there’s something to work every body part at least once.

How much:
initiation fee $69, monthly fee $54 (with one-year contract).
