Homey and more modest than its downtown counterpart, the West End Y is in the midst of a much-needed facelift. A $7.5-million renovation (to be completed this spring) will add 3,500 square feet to the facility, double the number of lockers, beef up safety and environmental standards, and incorporate entirely new activity areas for children and youth (larger gyms, a video arcade). In addition to the squash courts on the upper level, a whirlpool and steam room are being added. Throughout the reno, the gym continues to offer access to its full range of cardio equipment (including Life Fitness step machines and Precor ellipticals), the 18-metre pool, and recreation and fitness classes (tae kwon do remains hugely popular). The serene fourth-floor outdoor child care area, festooned with greenery, has also undergone a make-over, now outfitted with an artificial mist system for hot summer days.
How much:
initiation fee $85, monthly fee $56.
