In business since 1949, and at one time called Alfie’s Gym, Riverdale Fitness was completely renovated in 2004. The walls were painted a sleek beige and brown, the floors covered in carpeting and rubber matting. New showers and air conditioning were added, and, while much of the equipment has been replaced, what’s left of the old regime has a friendly, down-to-earth approach. There are no aerobics classes save for kick-boxing, no Pilates and no steam rooms—just lots of strength and cardio equipment, all located in one spacious room above a Blockbuster. A dozen Atlantis machines and an enormous Maximum Force multi-station provide alternative ways to work your muscles.
How much:
initiation fee up to $99, monthly fee $40 (with first and last month down payment).
