Fitness & WellnessGyms: Boutique

Gyrotonic by Crispin

A little like three-dimensional Pilates, the Gyrotonic Expansion system is rapidly gaining converts, who seek a long, lean, strong physique and a workout that combines core strength with flexibility. Developed by Juliu Horvath (a former swimmer, gymnast and dancer), it incorporates movements from yoga, Tai Chi, dance, swimming and gymnastics. Owner-instructor Crispin Redhead—an enviably physiqued former dancer with Toronto Dance Theatre—and his team gently coax beginners into proper movements on the full array of machines (including the somewhat sinister-sounding ladder). Clients range from tweens to seniors, and include everyone from National Ballet danseuses (Gyro was originally developed for dancers seeking bulk-free strength) to golfers looking to get an edge on their swing. All movements constantly work the abs and back, with an emphasis on form, breathing and posture. While some exercises might seem easy at first, you’ll definitely feel the burn afterward. Gyro emphasizes a full range of motion, so it’s kosher even for those with disc problems or scoliosis.

How much:
one-hour class with machines $80–$90, 90-min. machine-free mat classes $30.
