As befits its name, 10-year-old Urbane Cyclist caters to all manner of city-dwelling bicyclists: there are fixed-gear track bikes for couriers and hipster OCAD students; a wide range of Wike and Chariot trailers for toddler-towing parents; and joint-friendly recumbent machines for riders in search of more comfort. This diversity is embodied by the store’s Urbanite Commuter ($675), a solid, custom-made hybrid tricked out with fenders and a rack. At twice the price, a Dutch-made Bikkel touring bike ($1,299) offers comparable comfort and even more bells and whistles: a completely enclosed chain system, built-in rear wheel lock, and lights. Aspiring racers and weekend warriors will want to pick up a classic Louis Garneau Canada merino wool jersey ($140). Tune-ups are offered at two levels: basic ($40) and deluxe ($75).
